After completing a successful career at MSU, Greg Jones is ready to play in the NFL. The former linebacker and leading tackler for the past four seasons participated in MSU’s Pro Day on March 16, running the 40-yard dash in the mid-4.7s and participating in position drills.

Jones, who is projected as going anywhere between the second and fourth rounds, said he’s been given good feedback for the April 28-30’s NFL Draft, but said he’ll have to wait and see what happens during the draft.

Jones did 21 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press and had a vertical jump of 31.5 inches at the NFL scouting combine.

He was recognized as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year as a junior and earned All-America honors his final two seasons, eventually leading the Spartans to a Big Ten co-championship as a senior.

Jones, who said he’s talked to representatives from all 32 teams, decided to stay for his senior season rather than enter the NFL Draft after his junior season and said he’s glad he had the opportunity to win a conference title.

The State News caught up with Jones at Pro Day and asked him about his experiences and expectations of going to the NFL.

Regarding the 40-yard dash…
Greg Jones: I feel great about my 40 time. I ran a couple 4.75s at the combine. I knew that coming back here, I would do a lot better, and I talked to my agent and some scouts said, ‘Hey, it wouldn’t be too bad if you ran it again, just so you get a better time,’ I feel great about it.

On the other measurable drills…
GJ: A lot of the coaches and scouts I talked to said it wouldn’t really matter (for the draft.) I think my game film speaks for itself, that’s something I am very proud of, but it’s just putting it together. That’s something that made me go back and reflect on what I did and made me very happy about the résumé I’ve put together.

Regarding Pro Day and Combine differences…
GJ: I think this is more realistic. I know there’s some cameras and stuff out here, but it’s with the people you’ve been playing with that know you best. Everybody wants you to do well, that’s the big difference. At the combine, it was a lot of competition, a lot of cameras that should or should not have been there, I don’t know, but it’s just a bunch of tests. I think the real test is when you get the pads on.
