Big Ten announces division names, logo

December 13, 2010

The Big Ten Conference revealed a new logo and announced football division names for the conference Monday on Big Ten Network.

The division names are Legends and Leaders. MSU is in the Legends division with Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska, Northwestern and Minnesota.

The Leaders division includes: Penn State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Indiana, Purdue and Illinois.

“Legends’ is a nod to our history and to the people associated with our schools who are widely recognized as legends — student-athletes, coaches, alumni and faculty,” Big Ten commisioner Jim Delany said in a release.

“Leaders’ looks to the future as we remain committed to fostering leaders, the student-athletes who are encouraged to lead in their own way for the rest of their lives, in their families, in their communities and in their chosen professions,”

Here are some alternatives to the logo.

The logo was developed by Michael Bierut and Michael Gericke of the international design firm Pentagram.

“The new Big Ten logo was developed to symbolize the conference’s future, as well as its rich heritage, strong tradition of competition, academic leadership, and passionate alumni,” Gericke said in a release.

“Its contemporary collegiate lettering includes an embedded numeral “10” in the word “BIG,” which allows fans to see “BIG” and “10” in a single word. Memorable and distinctive, the new logo evolved from the previous logo’s use of negative space and is built on the conference’s iconic name, without reference to the number of member institutions.”

The conference also announced 18 new trophies, with names coming from some of the Big Ten’s best players and coaches.

The Big Ten Championship trophy, which will be awarded to the winner of the Big Ten Championship game, will be called the Stagg-Paterno Trophy. The trophy is named after former University of Chicago coach Amos Alonzo Stagg and current Penn State coach Joe Paterno.

Three of the trophies are named after former Spartans.

The Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year award is partially named after former Spartan great Charles “Bubba” Smith.

The Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year award is partially named after former Spartan Morten Andersen, who is the NFL’s all-time leading scorer.

The Eddleman-Fields Punter of the Year award is named after former Spartan and current Miami Dolphin Brandon Fields.
