Energy company offers advice

November 23, 2010

Preparing a Thanksgiving meal for 12 people costs between 70 cents and $1.38, Consumers Energy calculated. The company provides natural gas and electricity to the East Lansing area.

Roasting a turkey in the oven costs about 64 cents, and a large pan of mashed potatoes cooked for 20 minutes costs about 5 cents. Baking dinner rolls or a vegetable casserole for 30 minutes costs about 8 cents, but reheating prebaked rolls in the microwave costs less than half a cent. Cooking giblet gravy on the stove top for 10 minutes costs about 3 cents.

To save money and energy, cooks should use glass or ceramic dishes, which hold heat better. Every time the oven door is opened, the temperature drops 25 to 75 degrees, so the oven window should be utilized to check on food. Roasting bags also save energy, cutting oven cooking time in half.
