MSU men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo has been selected to drive the pace car Aug. 15 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich., for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series CARFAX 400, speedway officials announced Thursday.

Izzo will drive a 2011 Ford Fiesta as he paces the 43 cars in the race before it begins. He also will join the drivers in meetings and take part in other pre-race ceremonies.

“I am excited to be chosen to drive the pace car for the CARFAX 400. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done before and I’m certain it will be quite a rush,” Izzo said in a statement. “More importantly, I’m honored to help support another great event in the state of Michigan.

“Michigan International Speedway is an asset to the state’s economy and exposure. I’m looking forward to being a small part of the action and interacting with some of the drivers. I’ve heard that a lot of them are college basketball fans, but I’m curious to see what it is that makes them the best of the best in their profession.”

Another state celebrity was bestowed with the honor of driving the pace car in June, when Detroit Red Wings defensman Nicklas Lidstrom paced the field for a NASCAR race.

Tickets still are available for the CARFAX 400 for as low as $25. For tickets, visit MISpeedway.com or call the MIS ticket hotline at 800-354-1010.
