Golfer Brehm returns to MSU as assistant coach

August 11, 2010

Former MSU golfer and All-American Ryan Brehm has decided to bring his talents back to East Lansing, only this time as an assistant coach for the men’s golf program.

His decision was announced Tuesday by men’s golf head coach Sam Puryear, who said in a statement that Brehm’s addition would be ideal for the players.

“I couldn’t be any more excited about Ryan coming back to help lead the Spartan golf program,” Puryear said. “Not only was Ryan our best player, but he was also the hardest working player and was tremendous in the classroom. That combination will be a great role model for our guys, as they continue their pursuit to be the best and play at the next level.”

Brehm, who will continue to pursue his professional golf career, was very successful for MSU during his time as a student from 2004-08. He finished second at the Big Ten Championship three times and is considered to be one of the best golfers in Spartan history, holding school records in career wins (five) and career stroke average (73.30).

Brehm also holds MSU records for 18-hole score (64, twice) and 72-hole score (203).

“I am excited to be part of the Michigan State golf program again,” Brehm said in a statement. “I am looking forward to the challenge ahead. This will provide me with a great opportunity to utilize my professional experience to mold the young Spartan golfers and continue the successful Michigan State tradition.”
