MSU women golfers, coach play in amateur

July 28, 2010

After MSU women’s golfer Liz Nagel used an impressive performance on the greens Tuesday to win stroke play competition at the 94th Michigan Women’s Amateur in St. Clair, Mich., the freshman advanced to match play Wednesday but lost in the first round.

With the top 32 golfers in stroke play moving on to the match play competition of the Michigan Women’s Amateur, Nagel and senior Natalie Brehm easily qualified.

Along with Nagel and Brehm, six other Spartans — senior Michelle Bowles, juniors Maddi Massa and Shannon Warner and incoming freshmen Lindsey McPherson and Christine Meier — made their way into match play. MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll also is competing in the event.

Nagel, who lost 1-up in the opening round, was one of four MSU golfers unable to advance. However, two of the Spartans who lost fell to their college teammates. Massa moved on to the second round by defeating Warner 2-up, while Meier was able to get past McPherson in 19 holes.

The other MSU golfer to fall was Bowles who lost 3 and 1.

Only one Spartan — Brehm — beat someone who wasn’t a teammate to advance to the second day of match play Thursday.

Slobodnik-Stoll also won her first-round match to advance.

Match play is expected to continue through Friday, when the championship match will be played.
