Spartan teams honored for academics

May 16, 2010

The MSU men’s basketball and men’s swimming teams received Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA on May 12 for garnering some of the best Academic Progress Rates in the country.

Academic Progress Rates, or APRs, are determined by the NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program using a formula that tracks the progress of each student-athlete on scholarship each semester.

The APR takes into account the individual athlete’s ability to remain academically eligible, stay at his or her school and graduate. It then calculates an overall team score for every program throughout the country.

Programs with multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of their respective sports are publicly recognized by the NCAA each year.

Of the 37 Division I basketball programs to make the cut, MSU was one of only three Big Ten teams. Similarly, the men’s swimming team was one of just two conference teams to be a part of the 15 swimming programs the NCAA recognized.
