Jenrette, Smith get jail time for Nov. fight

One former MSU football player and one current player will see jail time for their involvement in a Nov. 22, 2009, altercation at Rather Hall.

Former junior safety Roderick Jenrette and sophomore wide receiver Fred Smith were sentenced Friday at East Lansing’s 54-B District Court, along with former redshirt freshman defensive end Jamiihr Williams, junior offensive lineman J’Michael Deane and junior cornerback Chris L. Rucker.

Jenrette will serve 90 days behind bars for punching communication junior Brent Mitchell in the face.

Jenrette also will pay about $1,500 in court fees and fines. He is scheduled to start his sentence April 9.

Sophomore wide receiver Fred Smith will face five days in jail for pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit assault and battery.

Although the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office did not recommend jail time, Judge David Jordon said the severity of the crime required it.

Smith’s lawyer, Norman Gaffney, said he was meeting with the prosecutor about the jail sentence.
Deane, Williams and Rucker received probation and community service. All three pleaded guilty to assault and battery charges in February.

Deane and Rucker are required to complete 150 hours of community service and 12 months of probation. Williams will serve 18 months probation and 150 hours of community service. All 11 players charged in connection with the fight have pleaded guilty and seven have been sentenced.

Rucker told Jordon he would not be seeing Jordon again and he wanted to stay out of trouble. Jordon told Rucker he was much more than just a student or football player to most.

“When you get celebrity, when you get held up to some extent, you are a role model,” Jordon said.
Mitchell’s lawyer, Vanessa Moss-Williams, read a statement from Mitchell about the altercation.

Mitchell and members of the Iota Phi Theta fraternity were victims of the players’ assault in Rather Hall.

“I would like the men to learn you can’t solve problems by beating up on people,” the statement read.
Jenrette and Williams are not returning for the Spartans next season. Williams plans to attend Grand Rapids Community College and continue to play football.

Jenrette said he has been in contact with high school coaches about potential future plans and expects to meet with schools in Florida and Kansas before April 9.

“Most importantly, I just want to get my degree,” Jenrette said. “I’m a year away.”
