Spartans drop 1st 2 matches of season

September 27, 2009

Following four impressive weekends of play to start the season, the No. 16 MSU volleyball team got its first taste of the Big Ten in two losses this weekend.

The Spartans fell Friday to Purdue, 3-1, then were not able to regroup Saturday against Indiana, falling 3-1.

The losses drop MSU to 12-2 on the season, but 0-2 in the Big Ten. Head coach Cathy George said it’s important for the team to be consistent and not get caught up in the upswings and downswings.

“Last year we had real high highs and real low lows, and this year we’re hoping to pull the two of them together,” George said last week.

MSU lost the first two sets Friday against Purdue and was not able to recover. The Spartans were tied with Indiana 1-1 going into the third set, but after getting ahead early, dropped the last two sets.

Sophomore Becca Zlabis led the Spartans with 12 kills and 10 digs against Indiana. MSU looks to rebound this weekend against Illinois on Friday and Northwestern on Saturday at Jension Field House.
