The statement “Higher education appeared to be one of the winners in a national budget proposal Thursday that was full of spending cuts” in Student aid, research priorities in Obama’s budget (SN 2/27) is a poster child for the failure of journalism today in that it pays more attention to what President Barack Obama said was in the budget rather than what is actually in the budget.
When does this “pay-as-you-go” kick in? Couple that with an incredible “stimulus” package (outside the budget) that is largely pork and Democrat spending unrelated to stimulating anything (it’s more related to implementing the Democratic philosophy) and you have the makings of a full-fledged switch from capitalism to socialism.
The State News and most other media ignore budget facts just like they ignored salient facts for the whole election cycle, considering style more important than substance.
Obama seldom said anything of substance during the election, but his platitudes and promises were well presented, according to journalists. Also, he’s calling it “ending the war responsibly.”
Are you paying attention to the fact that Obama’s administration is taking the same road with respect to anti-terror interrogations that the Bush administration took? But he’s not mentioning it.
Are you paying attention to the promise that 95 percent of taxpayers would not have tax increases, yet he is proposing a cap-and-trade system that would develop alternative energy only by making traditional energy as expensive as the alternatives? That’s a tremendous tax on everyone.
All the while he’s proposing increases in gas taxes, cigarette taxes (which hit the poor disproportionately) and many others. Are you paying attention to the fact that he promised no more earmarks, yet allowed his first major bill to go through full of them?
But he called them “stimulus.”
Are you paying attention to the fact that he couldn’t even get his Cabinet filled without having to do it over in the first 30 days? He missed the tax cheating and criminal investigations on a few of his finest appointees.
Are you paying attention?
