Pretrial in Brown case cancelled

February 9, 2009

The final pretrial hearing for the man accused of murdering MSU student Katherine A. Brown and three others was canceled, court officials said.

The hearing originally was set for Monday.

Troy Brake, 31, is charged with four counts of murder and three counts of felony firearm possession. Officials in the 20th Circuit Court in Grand Haven said the next scheduled hearing in the case is a motion on April 17. The official date for the trial to begin is May 19, court officials said.

Brake is accused of murdering Brown, 18; her boyfriend Jeremy Zimmer, 20; his mother Sharmaine Zimmer, 53; and his brother Tyler Zimmer, 17. Brown and the Zimmers were killed Sept. 29, 2008 and the Zimmers’ home was set one fire in an attempt to cover the murders, police said.

Medical examiners have determined Brown was killed by blunt trauma to the head, while the Zimmers were shot.

Brake was arrested Oct. 16, 2008 for allegedly beating a prostitute in Grand Rapids. He was in possession of a .40-caliber Glock gun that was similar to the one used to kill the Zimmers.

Brake rejected a plea deal on Jan. 22.
