Republicans did the right thing by turning down stimulus

This letter is in response to Farhan Bhatti’s article, Republicans made wrong decision (SN 2/3). The Republican minority in the house did the right thing by voting unanimously against the stimulus. The wrong decision they made was supporting former President George W. Bush’s stimulus package.

There are a myriad of justified reasons voters swept Republicans out of office in the last election, none of which are a lack of federal government spending. Under the Bush administration, our federal debt went from about $5.7 trillion to about $10 trillion, according to cbsnews.com. Perhaps the Republicans who remain in office realize that this may in fact be a serious reason as to why the voters chose to kick their fellow GOP members out of office. Hopefully the Republicans are now serious about reducing both federal spending and the national debt.

The first stimulus has already failed. It is time for politicians to confess and admit that they have made a mistake and that stimulus packages with costs beyond our comprehension are not the answer to the economic downturn. For all the mistakes they have committed in the past, at least Republicans are admitting to their mistakes and willing to move on.

Furthermore, the most astonishing part of Bhatti’s article is when he states that Republicans have tossed aside bipartisanship in an attempt to score political points with voters. This is the job of our elected representatives. They are supposed to represent the people and do what the people wish, hence scoring political points with their constituents. Unity is not a justified reason to dismiss principal and ignore the wishes of the supposedly represented.
