Council to discuss electronic signs

February 10, 2009

A more user-friendly ordinance that regulates the latest technologies in electronic signs will be discussed Tuesday at the East Lansing City Council meeting.

The council also will talk about the use of signs for neighborhood events at its work session tonight, set for 7 p.m. in Courtroom 2 of the 54-B district court, 101 Linden Street.

Council raised issue with the process of regulating signs at open houses, graduations and neighborhood gatherings at a meeting last month.

Howard Asch, director of code enforcement and neighborhood conservation for East Lansing, said the main goal of the electronic sign ordinance is to keep the regulations up to date. The current ordinance was written before electronic signs were common.

“It’ll help better deal with the issues that people had with electronic signs,” Asch said.

Also on the agenda is a discussion for an ordinance to rezone approximately 2.1 acres of land at Lake Lansing and Abbot roads for future development.

Currently, the area in question is an empty lot, but city organizers would like to make it more enticing for developers who may be interested in the area.
