Trial begins for man charged in assault

The trial for the man charged with the assault of a female student last fall begins today at the Veterans Memorial Courthouse, 313 W. Kalamazoo St., in Lansing.

Jason Evans, 25, of Mason, is charged with felonious assault with a dangerous weapon and unlawful imprisonment after assaulting a then-19-year-old female student on Oct. 6, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Evans allegedly approached the victim near Beaumont Tower and held a pocket knife to her neck.

The student did not sustain any injuries.

Prosecutors added the charge of unlawful imprisonment Oct. 28 during a preliminary examination. Evans’ bail also was increased from $50,000 to $500,000 during the hearing.
