City Council to discuss land options tonight

January 19, 2009

New development proposals line the East Lansing City Council’s business agenda as council members will discuss issues involving the future of three key city land areas. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Union.

The council will consider acquiring public right-of-way for the Avondale Square Project after the project had disappeared from the agenda during the past few weeks.

The development calls for the creation of 16 single-family homes and 14 townhouses along Virginia Avenue, ranging in price from $160,000 to $200,000.

The area is heavily occupied by student-renters.

An issue with one of the current property owners has slowed progress for the development, but the council plans to come to a resolution tonight, Mayor Vic Loomis said.

“We’ve weighed the issue as to whether or not we should proceed down the avenue, and I will be making a recommendation on that,” Loomis said.

Loomis said he wouldn’t disclose the recommendation until he had spoken with colleagues.

The council also is set to decide on the Delta Triangle rezoning project, which has been discussed at length during several recent council meetings.

The rezoning project concerns 3.8 acres of land along Louis Street, Michigan Avenue, Delta Street and Elm Place that is occupied by fraternity and sorority houses.

There is potential to create more multiple-family and student houses in the area, East Lansing’s planning and zoning administrator Darcy Schmitt said last week.

Schmitt could not be reached for further comment Monday.

“We’ve been looking at this one a number of times, but we need to look at it in consistent form with the comprehensive plan,” Councilmember Roger Peters said.

A third rezoning issue on the agenda concerns the rezoning of approximately 2.1 acres near 100 W. Lake Lansing Road.

The ordinance calls for rezoning of the land into a retail sales business district.

“There is not a site plan or project proposed for this site, and we’re weighing the benefits,” Loomis said.

Peters said the city should consider all the rezoning ?measures with sights set on ?the bigger picture for East Lansing.

“We need to see the extent to which they carry out the objectives of the comprehensive plan,” Peters said.
