The Chief Okemos Council, with the help of MSU students, is attempting to form something no other university in the country has: An Eagle Scout club.
“There isn’t an organization in the country at a university for Eagle Scouts,” said Dan Bettison, scout executive of the Chief Okemos Council. “We wanted to start something up to show what Eagles can do.”
The first meeting, held last week, was a mix of Bettison and James Roney, the Ojibwa suburban district executive, explaining what the club could accomplish if made a reality.
“We definitely want to try to make an adventure crew, so we can do adventurous things,” Bettison said. “We can do activities as a group, whether it be helping the campus or even overnight camps.”
If formed, he said he wants to focus on three areas: Networking, community service and involvement in local troops.
“There are a lot of scouts on campus we can unite,” Bettison said. “It’d be cool to see … that 40 Eagle Scouts did something for the campus grounds.”
Roney stressed the importance of networking today.
“A lot of professionals in the area are Eagle Scouts, so it is a great networking opportunity for the Eagles of MSU and give them a chance to further themselves as professionals,” he said. “It’ll be good to be able to put stuff on a résumé.”
The first obstacle will be getting the word out to students on campus, Bettison said.
“We know there are some faculty members that are Eagle Scouts,” he said. “So if we can find all of them and do something to find all the students, there are a lot of potential ideas that can be turned into a reality.”
With 66 people on the MSU Eagle Scouts group on Facebook.com, there are plenty of students to draw from and the club might expand to Lansing Community College, Bettison said.
“It could be the start of something great,” he said. “We can try and pull together all of MSU’s Eagle Scouts to see what we can do. It would be cool to start something that can be modeled at other schools.”
The 10 students in attendance for the first meeting were receptive to the idea, especially the camping.
“The volunteering and such will be OK for résumés,” anthropology freshman Jimmy Bennett said. “But it’s hard to find people to go camping with during the school year, so that is really what I’m looking forward to.”
