Recent warm weather not indication of global warming

November 5, 2008

East Lansing residents are enjoying the warm weather today, with the average temperature about 20 degrees higher than the historical average of 50 degrees.

Meteorologists said a low pressure front is moving in from the west and is pushing warm air through the Midwest.

“It’s like riding a wave,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Ernie Ostuno said. “You can be on the crest of it where the lighter warm air is and behind is colder air.”

Although the weather is a welcome treat to many people, it’s not that unusual, WLNS Chief Meteorologist David Young said.

“It’s definitely a nice change, but it is not record-setting or anything super (unusual),” Young said.

Students like the fact they don’t have to bundle up quite yet.

“I’m definitely happy (with the weather),” religious studies senior Mike Casey said. “It’s a little out of the ordinary, but I’m not overly distraught over it. I mean I would usually be wearing a hoodie, and I had to ditch that a while ago, but that’s it.”

Though some people could read into this warm weather as a sign of global warming, both meteorologists said that wasn’t necessarily the case.

“It’s hard to read anything like this (as) global warming,” Young said. “Global warming is about averages and how the whole year comes out. This is just a quick glimpse of hot weather.”

Ostuno added that it’s just the planet evening itself out.

“Fluctuations during the course of the year redistribute the pressure systems throughout the world,” he said. “This is a just a pressure system. In the case of global warming, temperature averages will rise.”

The warm temperatures are already on the way out. Weather in the 60s will begin today in Minnesota.

“The pressure system is moving across the country so the weather that is colder out west is on its way to Michigan,” Ostuno said.

The Midwest isn’t the only region experiencing out-of-the-ordinary weather.

“There’s colder air all the way across the Rockies,” Ostuno said. “It’s 30 in North Dakota with a blizzard warning and snowy in Salt Lake City. It’s a bit below normal for that region but they’ll still get a few snow storms this time of year.”

Wednesday might have been the last day of the year to see 70 degrees, Young said.

“It’s a fall treat, so enjoy,” Young said. “We were above normal in the middle of the week, but we’ll be below this weekend, so the averages will be back to late fall norms.”

The weather over the weekend is sure to disappoint those who enjoy this warm weather, Ostuno said.

“(Today) might be in the 70s,” Ostuno said. “Friday is going to be in the 50s and Saturday and Sunday will be in the low 40s. So make the most of the nice weather (today).”
