MSU Democrats trek E.L. in last-ditch effort to get out vote

November 4, 2008

The MSU Democrats and Students for Barack Obama are putting in their last effort today to get students to cast their ballots before the polls close at 8 p.m.

Members of both groups have been hitting the streets, making sure everyone goes to their precinct and votes.

“We’re doing grassroots at its finest,” said Kyle Dysarz, East Lansing Campaign for Change intern and ASMSU Student Assembly vice chairperson for external affairs. “We’re going around door to door, making sure people are included in the process.”

Students for Barack Obama is part of the East Lansing Campaign for Change.

The MSU Democrats also have been campaigning for local candidates — such as state Rep. Mark Meadows in the 69th District and 8th District U.S. House candidate Bob Alexander — by dropping off campaign ads in most dorms. They also have been campaigning to vote “Yes” on Proposal 2, which involves embryonic stem cell research.

“We’re seeing a tremendous turnout as far as I’ve seen,” MSU Democrats Vice President Mitchell Rivard said. “It’s going to pick up again as classes get let out. We’re expecting a very high turnout among young voters.”
