Local high school standout prepared for next level

As he trotted on the field for senior night, the crowd exploded with applause, recognizing it could be awhile before they see another player of Blake Treadwell’s caliber.

Treadwell, a monster offensive and defensive lineman for the East Lansing Trojans and 2009 MSU recruit, is the big man on campus in more ways than one.

Standing 6-foot-3, 270 pounds, Treadwell is just as big a presence off the field as he has been on it.

“His teammates gravitate to him, especially the linemen, because he models the type of behavior that you want from a kid, character-wise, academically as well as athletically,” East Lansing football head coach Bill Feraco said.

Although Treadwell is nice off the field, he has a mean streak on it.

“I’m relentless,” Treadwell said. “Never stop, keep going and good things will happen on the field.”

Treadwell, the son of MSU offensive coordinator Don Treadwell, is rated a four-star prospect and the nation’s third best center by Rivals.com.

His success is driven by his great speed and his unmatched desire to win, Feraco said.

“Without a doubt it’s his competitiveness, his desire to excel,” Feraco said. “When you start to blend that with athleticism, quickness, very good speed for a person his size and size and strength, then you get a kid that is what I like to call a football player.”

East Lansing has thrived on Treadwell’s play on both sides of the ball, offensive line coach Steve Anderson said.

“He really cements down both the offensive and defensive line,” Anderson said. “He works really well with the other guys. He’s really stepped up as a leader for us.”

East Lansing won on senior night 35-0, and Treadwell’s leadership has helped lead the Trojans to the MHSAA Division 3 Regional Finals, where tonight they will play Stevensville Lakeshore for a chance to play at Ford Field in the state semifinals.

“It’s my senior year,” Treadwell said. “I don’t want it to be anything bad, I want it to be the best I can. And one way for my seniors to step it up is for me personally to help lead them. It was a little challenging but I got the hang of it after awhile.”
