Music scene not stagnant, bands should work harder to be heard

This letter is in response to Friday’s Flavor of the Week article featuring the Lansing band Incarta. The headline read “Lansing rock band fights to be heard in midst of stagnant local music scene” and after reading the article I personally took offense to the local music scene being called stagnant.

I first arrived at MSU in August 2006, which was a month before the band released its first CD. Today was the first time I’d even seen its name. Why is that? I love live music and I love watching bands perform original material. How come I didn’t know about their shows? You should not blame the lack of response and support from the community on the community itself. The band lives down the street from an enormous, diverse and open-minded student body, not to mention the other colleges and high schools in the area. There are tons of places to play and be heard by an audience, such as bars, clubs, dorms, private residences and co-ops.

I think the guys in Incarta need to step back and evaluate their approach to cultivating a local scene. I feel that the members of the band view a local scene as a charity that students are obligated to support. The fact of the matter is that students are not going to pay a $5 cover to see a band that they have no interest in. If they are trying so hard with little success, maybe it’s their music that’s stagnant.
