In a letter recently published in The State News, Ranking system of girls at parties degrading, kills fun (SN 11/04), Robin Moore is quick to point out the degrading nature of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity without also noting her own wrongdoing. I am not a member of the fraternity, but am friendly with many of the brothers who live in the house. This isn’t a letter condoning their actions; however, if we are going to deem them degrading to women everywhere and frown upon what occurred last Friday night, I believe it also is important to point out the general hypocritical nature of her statements.
We are talking about a holiday where thousands of female MSU students flood parties and streets, using the excuse of Halloween to flaunt themselves in skimpy apparel and show everyone how “hot” they are. Aside from the fact that some of the statements made in her letter are completely false, notably that girls with low ratings were not readmitted to the party when they left — it is vital to point out not how disgusting AEPi’s actions were — but how repulsing the concept of Halloween is.
