Obama's tax plan will help struggling families to succeed

This is in response to the letter Redistribution not a good policy for class grades, U.S economy (SN 10/28). As a voter, before you simply label Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s proposal on tax reform as a “redistribution plan” and compare it to a plan that would give slacker students inflated GPAs, it is important to understand what exactly his tax policy would entail.

Obama’s tax strategy would cut taxes for 95 percent of working families and stop the tax breaks that the wealthiest 2 percent of our country have enjoyed for eight years. This proposed plan would remove capital gains taxes for small businesses and lower taxes for businesses that choose to create and keep jobs in the U.S. His tax plan also puts an emphasis on reducing the financial burden placed on low- and middle-income families trying to save and send their kids to college.

There are hard-working Americans, here in Michigan and across the country, who try every day to achieve the “American dream” and neither candidate’s projected tax plan is going to change that.

Obama’s plan has the potential to give much-needed relief to Americans who are struggling in these especially difficult economic times.

So before you go vote next Tuesday, do not let irrational fear based on a hypothetical scenario involving the unfair redistribution of grades and GPAs make the decision for you. Get the facts on each candidate’s platform and make an informed decision.
