Unfair portrayals of U-M students makes MSU students look bad

The most recent of Ian Brown’s comics is very disappointing to me. It states that the No. 2 reason University of Michigan stinks is because “they have to work too hard.” The drawing is of a guy with glasses reading from a tall stack of books in Ann Arbor juxtaposed with an East Lansing scene of someone napping midday.

Is this how most MSU students think? Let’s not get sucked into the false public assumption that because U-M has higher general admission requirements than MSU their classes are harder and their students are smarter. Students at U-M may think that they “go to Michigan, therefore they are better than you” (as the group on Facebook.com states) and that’s their prerogative. That attitude only truly becomes a problem when we MSU students begin to believe it.

I chose to come to MSU because of its excellent programs and culture, not because it was the only school that I could get into. I’m very proud of our university, and I think the rest of its students should feel that pride too.
