E.L. thieves should consider impact on families, children

An open letter to the persons who stole my 10-year-old son’s bike after last week’s football game:

Dear Bike Thieves,

On Saturday, on your way home from the football game, you decided to take my son’s bike from 720 Linden St. My husband and I live in a modest home in East Lansing. We both work very hard to be able to provide the necessities for our children and ourselves. There was one month where we had a little extra income and we were able to buy our sons the bikes they wanted. Do you know what it is like to take care of yourself and others?

My son rode his bike every day across town to his school. He loved doing it because it gave him a sense of independence. Now, after the bike theft, we are giving him rides to school. I just want you to know he was mad, but he didn’t let it get him down. He took two older and much smaller bike frames out of our shed and decided to try and build himself a bike because we do not have the money to run out and get him another one.

If you have a conscience, you will return the bike to where you found it. You will bring joy back to a 10-year-old boy, and there will be no questions asked.
