Debate to be held for Nov. proposals

September 11, 2008

Voters will be able to hear both sides of the debate about the proposals on medical marijuana and embryonic stem cell research at a community forum on Wednesday.

The campaign directors for the pro- and con-sides of the proposals will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the East Lansing Public Library Community Room, 950 Abbot Road.

The Lansing Area National Organization for Women (NOW) and the Lansing Area League of Women Voters are sponsoring the forum.

Mary Pollock, legislative vice-president of Michigan NOW, said the groups are cooperating because the league is experienced in holding neutral forums.

Pollock said there is no organized opposition to the medical marijuana proposal. However, League of Women Voters of the Lansing Area President Kathy Esselman said there will definitely be a speaker to represent the opposition at the forum.

The campaigns for and against embryonic stem cell research will speak first at 7 p.m., and the medical marijuana discussion will start at 8 p.m. These two initiatives are the only ones on the ballot for this two-year election cycle.

Each campaign will be given a specific amount of time to speak — 15 minutes to present their case, five minutes to rebut the other side’s case and then a question and answer session with assembled community members.
