I was incredibly disappointed this morning to find no coverage of the Common concert in The State News. I attended the awe-inspiring concert along with no fewer than 1,000 hip-hop enthusiasts — it was quite refreshing!
Common is an artist who promotes peace, understanding and equality. His audience’s demographic is both broad and compassionate. I was pleased to sway alongside people from all different walks of life and I was genuinely proud to see such a diverse group of people sharing one artist and one message in Common.
In contrast, the incessant coverage of riots of the past, present and future seems more likely to fuel future revelers than remedy disruptive behavior. It appears that a wonderful opportunity to highlight a conscious and unified campus has been overshadowed by one of disorderly conduct. I am hopeful that upcoming issues of The State News will glorify the college experience with a little more than a burning Dumpster.
