Izzo, Baum made coaches for Saturday's intrasquad football game

April 15, 2008

It’s evident MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo is a football junkie.

With Saturday’s intrasquad spring game quickly approaching, MSU football head coach Mark Dantonio made a couple of quick coaching additions — designating Izzo as a coach of the Green squad and men’s soccer coach Joe Baum a coaching member of the White.

“This was great, when Mark (Dantonio) called, I said I’ll do whatever I can do to get there — my schedule worked out so I’m looking forward to it, it should be fun,” Izzo said.

And the trash talking started immediately when Izzo and Baum encountered each other at Tuesday’s football practice, after giving their respective teams a pump-up speech for the week leading up to the game.

“I told them I don’t like to lose, in anything — I think they all feel the same way,” Baum said before Izzo grabbed his shoulders from behind, peeked up over them and delivered the first playful blow.

“The only advantage he has is in the kicking game,” Izzo butted in, drawing laughs.
