How to hem your pants

March 31, 2008

There’s no need to pitch a fit if your pants don’t fit correctly. With a few simple hemming tricks, you can take the length of your pants a long way.

1. Carefully undo the existing hem from the bottom of the pant with small scissors or seam ripper.

2. Find thread that matches the color and thickness of the original hem.

3. Try the pants on and fold each pant leg inward to your desired length. Pin in place.

4. Take off the pants and turn them inside out. Use a tape measure to determine the length of the fabric folded inward to establish a new hem length.

5. Measure and pin the new hem length into place on both legs.

6. Iron the edge of the new hem on both legs.

7. Sew a straight seam through the two layers of fabric around the edge of the legs about 1/4 inch from the bottom fold.

8. Press the fold flat with an iron.
