Gas prices may rise

November 19, 2007

While Shawn Patterson wasn’t heading home for Thanksgiving until today, the mechanical engineering senior made a trip to the gas station a day early.

Patterson, who filled up for $3.07 per gallon Monday, said he wanted to beat the price hike travelers typically experience in the days leading up to the holiday.

“(Gas prices) are definitely a big concern given that I have to pay for my own gas, so I try to look for deals,” he said.

Somewhat surprisingly, drivers have seen gas prices dip since last week, said Jim Rink, a spokesman for AAA Michigan.

“If you’re down to a half a tank, it might be a good idea to fill up,” Rink said. “Normally we’d see prices go up in advance of holiday, but we do still have two days before most people will actually be traveling, and prices could still go up.”

Michigan drivers are paying $3.15 per gallon, 9.4 cents less per gallon than a week ago. The price drop was even more drastic in the Lansing/East Lansing region, where drivers are paying an average of $3.149 per gallon, or 11.3 cents less per gallon.

Gas prices tend to climb near holidays due to an increase in demand, Rink said. An estimated 1.5 million Michigan citizens will travel during the Thanksgiving holiday period this year, according to AAA Michigan.

While 90 percent of those trips will take place on the road, the Great Lakes region shows the greatest increase — 4 percent — in expected air travel compared with the holiday last year.

Nicole Noll, director of market development for Lansing Capital City Airport, said the airport is prepared, but passengers can expect some delays.

“This is one of the busiest times, if not the busiest time, for us all year,” Noll said. “We’re asking passengers to show up early and with patience.”

Noll said passengers should show up to the airport 60-90 minutes early with their boarding passes, which are available on the airport’s Web site along with a discount voucher for half-off parking.
