Fashion fever

Look hot for the cold

November 12, 2007

Comparative cultures and politics freshman Elizabeth Marzotto models a blue patterned peacoat.

Your breath funnels out of your mouth like spouts from a steam engine. Your ears are redder than an Elizabeth Arden door. And your flip-flop clad feet closely resemble the remains of Donner party leftovers. It’s winter. But just because the weather is cooling down, don’t let your fashion fizzle like the sunlight. With black jeans, blazers and bold colors, it’s just heating up.

It’s in your jeans

Although some girls have been spotted clad in high waisted jeans, remember this: You aren’t older than 50.

Embrace your youth and wear something that doesn’t make you look like a kindergarten teacher. You do not shop at Christopher & Banks, so it shouldn’t look like you do.

Instead, opt for a pair of skinny jeans, which are both cute and functional.

For long winter walks across campus, it’s virtually impossible to avoid wet pant legs.

With skinny jeans, you can tuck them into your boots, avoiding the awkward feeling of scrunched up fabric around your ankles. Voila, dry jeans without the hassle.

Winter also is a great time to put your faded, distressed jeans back in the drawer and pull out bolder, blacker jeans.

The black jeans match nearly everything and put out a pleasant, British vibe – think Kate Moss.

Black jeans also are extremely slimming, so they appeal to women and men of all sizes.

For girls, try the Lux Skinny Jean Black Handsand, available at Urban Outfitters, 115 E. Grand River Ave., for $68.

Pea-fect

What has been a staple in winter clothing since practically the beginning of time, the peacoat is the most versatile coat known to man – and woman.

Today’s peacoats come in a variety of styles and lengths for both sexes.

Although peacoats originally were worn by sailors, they don’t have to be limited to stiff colors.

One such design for women comes from Urban Behavior, and bears a handsome plaid print for just under $60.

The style is available in both blue and yellow tones.

If you’re a guy and aren’t in the mood to tote around a heavy wool coat, opt for a suit jacket or blazer.

Blazers are easy to dress down when paired with a graphic tee or more formal when slipped on over a hooded cashmere sweater.

Express sells an array of blazers ranging from $178-228.

Hot head

Your parents always told you to put a hat on before you go outside, so why change now?

Throw on the AE Trapper Hat, available for $29.50 at American Eagle, and the cold weather will be the least of your worries.

The hat is a large accessory, so only wear it if you’re comfortable being the center of attention.

The heavy hat doubles as a fun piece for class rebels as well.

Not fond of listening in class?

Wear the hat and your headphones – no one will even suspect that you’re zoning out.

Red’s the rage

With the holidays just around the corner, embrace what can be called the “brightest neutral.”

Be it a silk tie, a bright pashmina or even a simple undershirt, the color red can liven up any outfit without making it overbearing.

Although red is a bright color, its warm tones will make you stand out against the white snow, ensuring that everyone notices your trendy outfit.

The bright red thermal by Nollie, available for $19.50 at PacSun, compliments a patterned Billabong sweatshirt, also available at PacSun.

If you’re still riding the crimson wave, slip on a bright red headband, available at Target.

“Stil” in style

Like peanut butter and jelly, skinny jeans and stilettos were practically made for each other.

If you’re already riding the bus to class to avoid the harsh weather, you might as well embrace less-than-comfortable shoes since you’ll be spending most of your time sitting down.

Black patent stilettos paired with the Beauty Lies tee, available for $29 at Metroparkusa.com, create a fierce, sassy look for weekend fun.

If you’re walking to a party, bring the Tweed Bomber by Armani Exchange for $130 (and an extra pair of shoes to save your tootsies from extreme blisters).

The jacket zips up in an extra large collar, making it unnecessary to carry around a scarf.

The coat’s liner adds extra pizazz as well – a bright pink inside.
