Attack marks third victim in campus string of assaults

October 24, 2007

The assault of a female student outside the Main Library on Tuesday has MSU police looking for a connection between the incident and two similar assaults in the past two weeks.

The 18-year-old victim told police she was grabbed from behind and inappropriately touched after exiting the library through the south side doors at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday.

She was able to free herself and run from the suspect without sustaining any injuries.

The victim said the suspect was wearing a black, puffy winter coat, a winter knit hat, dark winter gloves and a hood that was pulled over most of his face.

No physical description of the suspect was given.

Last week, two female students were assaulted as they walked on campus late at night.

The first victim escaped without injury after being grabbed from behind as she walked on the trail between Jenison Field House and the Kellogg Center on Oct. 14.

She described the suspect as a muscular, 6-foot-1-inch male with an unkempt beard and a tattoo on most of his right arm. She told police he was wearing jeans and a dark short-sleeve shirt.

Two days later, an 18-year-old student was grabbed from behind and groped while walking between East Shaw Hall and the Business College Complex.

She described the attacker as a 6-foot-male wearing dark clothing.

MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said the department will likely be in contact with the previous victims to help determine if there is a link between the cases.

“They’re following up on each one of them right now,” McGlothian-Taylor said.

Students received an e-mail Wednesday notifying them of the three assaults and an armed robbery of a food-delivery driver early Monday morning.

McGlothian-Taylor said students should walk in well-lit areas and with groups, be aware of their surroundings while walking and use such services as Capital Area Transportation Authority buses and State Walk.

Anyone with information about the recent assaults is being asked to call MSU police at (517) 355-2222.
