LouHa's maintains capacity for now

A proposal to increase the capacity of Lou & Harry’s Five Star Deli from 124 people to 155 people has been deferred until the first week of March.

The decision was passed by the City Council 3-2 during Tuesday’s City Council meeting at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road.

The motion was raised by councilmember Diane Goddeeris, who said she felt the council should learn more information about a Sept. 21 incident involving an off-duty, underage female employee of Lou & Harry’s, 245 Ann St., who was found intoxicated in the men’s bathroom of the restaurant and arrested by an East Lansing police officer.

“Since this capacity is really related to the drinking and there is the incident that we have that needs to be investigated, I’m not going to make a decision unless I’m absolutely certain that this isn’t going to escalate that same kind of behavior,” Goddeeris said.

Mayor Pro Tem Vic Loomis, councilmember Kevin Beard and Goddeeris all said they wouldn’t vote in favor of the proposal if they had voted Tuesday. Councilmember Beverly Baten said she would have voted in favor, while Mayor Sam Singh did not comment.
