Simmons, Gomez compete in Las Vegas

June 12, 2007

Former Spartan wrestler Nick Simmons, a four-time All-American, won two matches over the weekend at the U.S. Senior World Team Trials in Las Vegas, Nev.

Simmons received a first-round bye in the 121-pound freestyle division of the Challenge Tournament - the preliminary portion of the weekend. He then defeated Michael Martinez in the second round, 3-0, 6-0.

In the semifinals, he topped Eric Akin, 6-0, 6-1. He fell in the Challenge Tournament finals to Matt Azevedo, 2-4, 1-1, 3-0. With the loss, Simmons narrowly missed the secondary portion of the weekend, the Championship Finals.

MSU's Franklin Gomez, who will be a sophomore for the 2007-08 season, also competed. Gomez topped Eric Metzler in the first round of the 132-pound division of the Challenge Tournament, but lost his next two matches.
