June 1, 2007

The NCAA Division I men's golf championship began on Wednesday in Williamston, Va., with MSU finnishing the first day with a score of 283 — tied for ninth place.

The Spartans slipped to 15th place Thursday after posting a 287 on the second day.

The third round of the tournament tees off today, with the final round wrapping up Saturday.

Freshman Jack Newman and sophomore Grant Tungate each finished the first day with even par rounds, placing them 29th on the overall leader board.

Newman shot a 69 on Thursday, good for one-under, and moved into a nine-way tie for 14th place.

Tungate struggled Thursday, posting an 80 score that dropped him to 132nd place.

Sophomore Steve Cuzzort had a strong finish with four birdies and one par on the final five holes Wednesday. He finished with a 1-over-par 71. Like Tungate, Cuzzort also ran into trouble Thursday, shooting a 7-over-par 77 that dropped him to 120th place.
