Construction to cover campus

April 25, 2007

While students head home for the summer, construction on campus will be in full swing as about 20 road, building, steam and water distribution construction projects are planned.

The summer months are the busiest for campus construction most of the projects are scheduled to be completed by August. University Engineer Bob Nestle said MSU will spend about $30 million to complete the work.

"We have an unusually high number of road construction projects this summer," Nestle said. "We wanted to get them taken care of because it's the last summer to do it before Farm Lane closes."

Next year, Farm Lane Road is scheduled to shut down to begin constructing rail underpasses, forcing a heavy flow of traffic to find other ways of entering campus.

Dormitory Road

As part of the Snyder-Phillips Hall renovations, a large portion of Dormitory Road will be removed from Physics Road to the east side of the hall. The remaining portion of the road will be converted into handicap parking spaces and a transit drop off, Nestle said. Construction on this project is expected to last June through August. The project will create more green space to compensate for increased foot traffic as the food service in Mason and Abbott halls is being transferred to Snyder-Phillips Hall.

Bogue Street intersection

Auditorium Road will be extended to Bogue Street, creating a permanent intersection and an additional campus entrance. The project is scheduled to begin in July and will last about three to four weeks.

The new intersection will allow drivers to turn onto or from Bogue Street in both directions. It also will prohibit heavy traffic from flowing through a residential district between Snyder-Phillips and Mason halls.

Roundabouts

The roundabout at Wilson Road and Red Cedar Road will be eliminated this summer, Nestle said. The roundabout will become a regular, lighted intersection. There are no immediate plans to eliminate the remaining roundabout located at the intersection of Shaw Lane and Bogue Street.

Hagadorn Road bridge

The reconstruction project for the bridge on Hagadorn Road, just south of Grand River Avenue, is expected to be completed in August. The Ingham County Road Commission is handling this project.

Physics Road

In coordination with the Snyder-Phillips construction project, the Collingwood drive entrance connection to Physics Road will be eliminated in 2008. Drivers can enter onto Physics Road by taking Auditorium Road north. Two traffic loops will be developed for this project, which is planned to begin in May and be finished in August.
