Coffee growers' lives, struggle shown in film

March 19, 2007

The MSU Geography Club will present "Black Gold," a film about the global coffee industry, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in B102 Wells Hall. The film, a 2006 official Sundance Film Festival selection, explores the paradox between the $80 billion coffee industry and the poverty of coffee growers around the world.

The movie follows Tadesse Meskela as he struggles to save some 74,000 Ethiopia coffee farmers from bankruptcy. While the farmers strive to harvest some of the highest-quality coffee beans on the international market, Meskela travels the world trying to find buyers willing to pay a fair price. The event is free and open to the public.
