The university could see a change on campus if a proposal to plan to move the Kresge Art Museum to a new location is passed by the MSU Board of Trustees on Friday.
According to the board's agenda for the upcoming meeting, if the proposal passes, the project could cost up to $30 million.
Under the proposed project, the museum would also move into the old Paolucci Building along East Circle Drive, which is currently abandoned.
Officials from the museum did not want to comment on the issue until after the meeting, but MSU's chief engineer, Robert Nestle, said this site had a lot of good attributes that would benefit an art museum in the future.
"The current building is vacant and is not a good candidate for other uses," Nestle said.
"Primary consideration for placing a museum here was the highly visible site and an art facility like this would be a perfect place to begin building at."
Besides visibility, the proposal brings up other problems the current art museum has to deal with and shows how a new building could eliminate these problems.
Spacing and accessibility are mentioned as well as problems with temperature control and lighting that have an effect on art pieces, which could be avoided in a brand new building.
MSU Trustee Donald Nugent said it still has to go through the voting process before plans can be set in stone but added that by at least talking about the proposal, it is showing how MSU's interest in art is expanding.
"Whether we move it into a new building or renovate the old one, that will all be seen after we have voted on it," Nugent said.
"Ideally, we would like to put it over in the new building to improve the exposure of the arts around campus."
Nugent added that other colleges, such as Iowa State University, regularly have included some kind of construction projects in their art departments.
He said hopes to see more of these types of projects in the future.
"MSU has kind of neglected the art scene around here, and I am glad to see we are taking notice of it now," Nugent said.
