Jumping onto the baseball bandwagon? Pretending to be a lifelong Tigers fan? Here are some terms you should know — they just might help you keep your secret through the World Series.

South Paw: A left-handed pitcher

Hit and run: When a base runner takes off before the ball is hit. This requires the batter to attempt to make contact with the pitch, whether it's a ball or a strike.

Balk: When the pitcher tries to catch a base runner off guard with an illegal motion; this entitles all runners to advance one base.

RBI (runs batted in): The number of runners hit in by a batter.

Designated hitter: A player who replaces the pitcher in the batting lineup.

Sac fly: A fly ball out that scores a baserunner.

Sac bunt: A bunt that allows a baserunner to advance but results in the batter being called out at first base.

Ground-rule double: A double awarded to a batter when a ball goes over an outfield wall after bouncing off the ground or being interfered with by a player or fan.

Forward K: When a batter is struck out swinging at a pitch.

Backward K: When a batter is struck out while watching a pitch.

BB (base on balls): When a batter is awarded a base after the pitcher throws four balls.

Suicide squeeze: When a batter uses a sacrifice bunt to advance a runner from third. It's done when there are less than two outs.
