University's image at stake; Smith's time is up

On a night when the 1966 team was present, the mood was right for a smashmouth football victory. But the only thing shown at Spartan Stadium was that our young kids played too hard for a coach who exemplifies the word coward.

Forget the rain excuse. John L. Smith lost a 21-point lead to Notre Dame last year, and he did the same this year with his prevent offense. He has his players take a knee when returning a kickoff, which even made the announcers laugh. All the world knew he would run the ball, and the best arm in the Big Ten was 0-3 passing in the second half until the last few minutes.

Notre Dame won because they never quit or changed their game plan. Notre Dame could not stop our passing game, so we went to the run. And when Notre Dame could not stop our running game, we went to the pass. We have given Smith enough time, but the image of our university is now at stake. Perhaps it is time that the "L" in John L. Smith means "leave."
