Bike theft happens often, should be greater concern

My daughter, soon to be a summer graduate of MSU, has just had her second bicycle stolen. Although she used approved, heavy duty police recommended locks, someone still used bolt cutters.

I realize that as crimes go, this is not huge — but it happens a lot, and it is hard on individual students who depend on their bikes. Because she is living off campus, my daughter had to go to the East Lansing police station where she was fobbed off by a new and uninterested officer.

My point is that it is clear to me that someone is conducting a very sweet little bicycle resale operation, and if the police were at all interested, the culprit could be found out. I suggest that some pressure be brought to bear. Also, students, do the right thing, and do yourselves a favor — before you buy a used bike, get the serial number and run it by East Lansing police and campus police. You can make a difference.
