Holding down the fort

Playing well on your home court has proven to be essential to winning the Big Ten title, as no Big Ten team in the past 14 seasons has lost more than one league game on its home floor and went on to win a share of the league title. The last time this occurred was in 1991 when Indiana went 7-2 at home and shared the league title with Ohio State.

On fire:

Ohio State men: The Buckeyes have won seven of eight and, with games against Northwestern and Purdue on the slate, seem to be the front-runners for the league title. In that stretch, the Buckeyes won at U-M and MSU but dropped a game at Wisconsin.

Ohio State women: The Buckeyes haven't lost since New Year's Day, giving them a win streak spanning two months and 16 games, including a 31-point victory over MSU last week. They enter the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 1 seed and have been ranked in the Top-10 all season.

Cold as Ice:

MSU men: The Spartans have lost four of five games — with three of the losses coming on the road— causing them to slip out of the Big Ten title hunt. Now the Spartans are in danger of having to play on the first day of the Big Ten Tournament.

Michigan women: The Wolverines concluded a winless Big Ten season Sunday with a 10-point loss to Illinois. During their entire 0-16 conference season, Michigan lost by double digits in all but one game, a 51-43 loss to Purdue.

Shimek: Best of the best

Several players from the No. 16 MSU women's basketball team were honored by the Big Ten on Tuesday.

Senior forward Liz Shimek was a consensus first-team All-Big Ten selection. She was named to the third team as sophomore and the second team as a junior.

An All-Big Ten second-team nod went to senior guard Lindsay Bowen. It is the third consecutive year that Bowen has received the accolade.

Also earning recognition were junior guard Victoria Lucas-Perry, who was an honorable mention, and freshman forward Aisha Jefferson, who was named to the All-Freshman Team.

Ohio State's Jessica Davenport was a unanimous selection for Big Ten Player of the Year.
