Freshman trio gels with on-ice chemistry, off-ice friendship

January 13, 2006
Freshman forward Tim Kennedy skates around a Western Ontario defender during a game at Munn Ice Arena on Oct. 14. The Spartans won, 4-2, and take back to the ice tonight against Alaska Fairbanks 7 p.m.

They've combined for 14 goals and 25 total points this season.

They combined for two huge goals in the 3-3 CCHA-opening tie at Michigan, and they've all been drafted by various NHL clubs.

But the greatest part about the trio of Justin Abdelkader, Tim Kennedy and Tim Crowder is that they're all just freshmen.

"They have good chemistry; they seem to mesh really well," MSU head coach Rick Comley said of the line. "They play together a lot."

Although they started the season playing together, Abdelkader and Crowder were split up when Kennedy suffered a hand injury Oct. 25 in an exhibition contest against the U.S. National Team Development Program.

"If there hadn't been an injury, they probably would have played every game together," Comley said. "I like the way they work off each other."

Last weekend against Wayne State, the line was put back together for the first time since Kennedy's injury. Their time apart didn't seem to set them back.

"We're all alike kind of players," Abdelkader said. "We're a really unselfish line, and we all have the same attitude coming on the ice. We just know where each other's going to be.

"It's a good camaraderie between each other on the same line and being freshmen."

At more than 6 feet, Abdelkader and Crowder present more of a physical force, and Kennedy is more of the passing, finesse forward.

"Kennedy's really good with the puck down low," Abdelkader said. "He'll also hit though. We can all shoot, we can all find the back of the net, we're all good at moving the puck."

They all agree the amount of time they spend together where they live in South Wonders Hall helped build chemistry on the ice.

"We hang out a lot at night in the dorms," Kennedy said. "Those two are always in my room, or I'm always in their room and we're always hanging out."

Their friendship off the ice has translated to nothing but fun on the ice.

"We just work our butts off when we're out there, and it just clicks," Crowder said. "They're great guys, and I love playing with them."

Mystery Alaska

The Spartans will face off against Alaska Fairbanks tonight and Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena.

The matchup will mark the second series between the two schools in a month. The Spartans (10-8-5 overall, 4-5-4 CCHA) played a road series during the weekend of Dec. 9 at Fairbanks (9-8-3, 5-7-2), where the two teams tied and then MSU won to take three of four points on the weekend.

Comley is particularly concerned about the special teams play in the upcoming series.

"Their defenseman can really shoot the puck on the power play," he said. "That hurt us the first game up there.

"They're good. They're well coached; they're well prepared. It really should be a really good series."

Faceoff is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. both nights. Fox Sports Net will televise Friday's game, and CSTV will have television coverage on Saturday.
