ONLINE UPDATE: Women start strong with win over UC Santa Barbara, 86-55

November 18, 2005
MSU guard Rene Haynes celebrates from the bench during the final minutes of Friday's game at Breslin Center.

"It was a good solid game for us tonight," MSU head coach Joanne P. McCallie said. "We made some strong improvements in various aspects of the game tonight."

The Spartans took control of the game early and never looked back. They got out to a 27-4 lead early in the first half and never let the lead get to less than 10. The team was up by 12 at halftime.

The Spartans once again came out strong in the second half and put the game away behind a solid night from senior forward Liz Shimek who dropped 26 points on the Gauchos.

"Our inside game is so important," McCallie said. "We all know what Liz is capable of doing, but it is just as important to make sure that the ball is shared and that our posts get as many touches as possible."

At the end of the night, the Spartans ended up with four players in double figures. Senior guard Lindsay Bowen finished the game with 16 points and junior guard Rene Haynes finished with 14 to go along with fellow junior guard Victoria Lucas-Perry who had 15.

"We really focused on our fast break tonight and our defense," Shimek said. "This was also a total team effort from us tonight. We got young players in there and they didn't miss a beat and when they were in there the intensity never fell off either."

The Spartans held the Gauchos to just 33 percent from the floor, while shooting 53 percent from the floor themselves.

They also out-rebouned the Gauchos 44-32 for the night with Shimek and sophomore center Laura Hall, who each had seven boards, leading the Spartans.

Overall the Spartans had 14 players enter the game tonight and the team depth is something McCallie is hoping to continue to build.

"It was nice to be able to play different players and not lose the intensity of the game," McCallie said. "The turnovers were a little high, but that is something that will come with time."

The Spartans turned the ball over 19 times, but had 19 assists on offense. The Gauchos turned the ball over 16 times and had 11 assists.

The Spartans return to action at 2 p.m. Sunday when they host Western Carolina.
