Proposal to extend cafeteria hours great idea; plan needs some fine tuning before deciding

Students don't operate on the same schedule as everyone else.

With everything students do in a day, they don't always have time to schedule everything around meals.

And now, the university is trying to help out.

Bruce Haskell, coordinator of Food Services, proposed a plan on Wednesday that will extend all cafeteria hours from 7 a.m. to midnight. He also said the lowest meal plan option would upgrade to unlimited meals, which eliminates the 10- and 15-meals-per week plans.

To compensate for the cost of keeping the cafeterias open, students would be charged the same fee unlimited meals currently cost, $1,870, plus about $100. This would be the basic, lowest-cost plan available.

The proposal could also possibly remove Totally Takeout.

Although having the option of eating later sounds great, more planning is needed to ensure they are really meeting the needs of all students.

Totally Takeout is a very convenient and largely used meal option for many students that allows them to pick up food on the go. Possibly removing this option and forcing students to eat in a cafeteria that is frequently busy during peak hours could be a problem for students on a tight schedule.

Students who don't have the time don't eat every meal in the cafeteria.

Making every plan include unlimited meals is not fair to students who only eat at cafeterias a few times every week. Students shouldn't be forced to pay the large cost associated with unlimited meals if they are not going to utilize all of them.

Yet extending hours is a great idea. Students seem to stay awake later and wake up later. This would accommodate late-night, studious people to eat when they have more time.

Overall, trying to make a meal plan more accommodating for students is a great idea and should be pursued. But before a set plan is finalized, the aforementioned issues should be addressed.
