I'm not sure what all the buzz was about in the article on intelligent design ("MSU profs oppose intelligent design as science" SN 10/5). I've always tended to lean toward evolutionary theory, but to assert that evolution is fact and that intelligent design should not be considered at all, seems a bit extreme to me.
I don't claim to be a scientist and I can't tell you what sort of standing intelligent design has in the scientific community, but why should it be shut out of consideration? After all, isn't science the search for knowledge through observations?
Look intelligent design up in an encyclopedia and you'll find that all it suggests is that certain features of the universe exhibit characteristics of a product resulting from an intelligent design or cause, rather than evolution. Does that sound unscientific to you? Surely scientists would not rule out any possibilities before making their observations.
I've always said that I don't know how the universe came to be. You would think scientists would keep an open mind about it too.
