Beating the heat

With temperatures expected to approach the 90s, people are looking to escape the sweltering heat and overbearing rays of the sun.

Families are fleeing to the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center, 6400 Abbott Road, to cool off.

The center recently opened on June 3, and pool manager Josi Dunham said the center is important in helping people beat the heat.

"Not everybody has a chance to have a pool at home," she said, adding that about 500 to 600 people use the facility each day.

Haslett resident Matt Pokryfki, 12, launches himself off the diving board at the aquatic center.

Laura Moore and her 9-year-old daughter, Kayla , take a trip down the water slide together in an inner tube.

Kayla, a student at Red Cedar Elementary School, 1110 Narcissus Drive, came to the aquatic center with the school on a field trip.

For many people, ice cream provides another relief from the summer heat.

The rising temperatures increase business for the local ice cream stores as well.

"On a day like today, way more people come in to buy a milkshake," said Chris Kettler, kitchen manager of The Parlor on Campus, 321 E. Grand River Ave.

A class of kindergartners from St. Thomas Aquinas School, 915 Alton Road, celebrated their last day of class at another ice cream shop on Wednesday.

"Kids love it," mother and chaperone Karen Flores said.

"It's a nice, cool treat."
