'Capital area' cats

Right, packaging senior Alison Jacobs scratches a cat's head in the new cat room at the Capital Area Humane Society.

Previously, the adoption room housed cats in 28 cages.

The cats now roam freely and play in the space with potential adopters.

One of the Capital Area Humane Society's 23 adoptable cats enjoys the amenities of the center's new cat room.

The room includes cubbyholes, perches, nooks and play toys for the cats. "The cats are healthier and happier since the room opened," said adoption supervisor Greta Hardin.

"Plus, adoptions are up," she said.
