Palestinian viewpoint to be discussed today

April 7, 2005

MSU Students for Palestinian Human Rights will bring writer and Professor Ali Abunimah to campus to speak about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict at 7:45 p.m. today in room 473 of the MSU College of Law.

Abunimah said he hopes the presentation will shed some light on the Palestinian perspective.

"There is a climate in this country where people are afraid of being critical of Israel," Abunimah said. "People think if you criticize Israeli policy then you're anti-Semitic."

Abunimah said students need to realize the United States helps fuel the conflict by offering unconditional aid to Israel.

"We need to demand a fair and sane action from our government," Abunimah said. "The current policy is disastrous for everyone."

Alfred Delgado, an East Lansing resident and Students for Palestinian Human Rights member, said the event was to promote free speech on campus.

"We need a more honest discussion of what the issues are," Delgado said. "So we can build a solid foundation for an open dialogue based on justice."

David Dworin, vice president of the MSU Jewish Student Union, said the presentation is part of life on a college campus.

"He's not the person I would bring," Dworin said. "I think they have a right to enrich the dialogue on campus."
