MSU Dairy Store sells Final Four ice cream

Now that both the MSU men's and women's basketball teams have advanced to the Final Four, the MSU Dairy Store has found its own way to commemorate the event.

A new flavor of ice cream, Final Four Fudge Dribble - a mixture of vanilla ice cream, fudge swirl and chocolate malted milk balls, which are supposed to look like basketballs - is being introduced today, said John Engstrom, dairy plant manager.

"I tried to find basketball (candy), but I couldn't find any in that short of time," Engstrom said. "I can find footballs and I can find hockey pucks, but I can't find basketballs. It turns out, actually, it's really hard to make."

The ingredients were shipped to the store overnight and arrived Thursday, and the ice cream was made and frozen for customers that same day.

"It's about as fast a turnaround as you could possibly do," Engstrom said.

This is the first time both the men's and women's basketball teams have gone to the Final Four, and that inspired the creation.

"We just felt that we should get in on the celebration and create something that we could have some fun with here at the (MSU) Dairy Store and support the teams," said John Partridge, associate professor of food science and human nutrition and faculty adviser for the store.

There will be 100 half-gallons for those who want to take some home and 45 3-gallon tubs for scooping into cones and cups. This is the second themed ice cream to hit the store recently. The first celebrated MSU's sesquicentennial.
