Shamrocks on sale for muscular dystrophy

March 14, 2005

Sparty's Convenience Stores' 11th annual campaign to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, or MDA, will end March 18. The "Shamrocks Against Dystrophy" campaign sells paper shamrocks for display at Sparty's stores for $1 and $5.

The Sparty's campaign has raised about $25,000 over the past 10 years to help fund MDA programs both on campus and nationally. This year is shaping up to be the best one yet for the campaign, Sparty's general manager Ken Deneau said, with more than $3,750 raised already.

Deneau said the money helps fund a variety of programs, from sending children with muscular dystrophy to summer camp to helping patients with wheelchair purchases.

"Many people are apathetic about giving to charity because they feel they can't do enough by themselves," Deneau said. "This is a way to turn everyone's pocket change into something more meaningful."

The MDA works to find cures for muscular dystrophy and is active on the campus through MSU's MDA clinic.
